 Relations with Africa and the EU's aid policy

This paper attempts to analyze the evolution of the EU aid policy from the European Union to the African continent throughout its history. This paper is not a specific work on the instruments of cooperation: Yaoundé Lome and Cotonu Conventions, with the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries; the Barcelona process and the Union for the Mediterraneanto the Arab countries of North African or bilateral agreements with South Africa. Nor does it deal with the importance of others aspects of cooperation such as food aid and humanitarian aid, used many times in the conflicts that have taken place in Africa.
Development aid is a very important chapter in the external relations of the European Union and in its Common Foreign Security Policy. Through the efforts of the Union, its Member States and the active participation of the civil society, the European Union is the leading global player in development assistance and humanitarian aid.
