 EU regional policies: From supporting regions lagging behind in their development to region-building

Abstract [En]: Today region building is in the focal point of many regional development initiatives. Though regions (sub-national territorial units) do not formally participate in the shaping of EU policy initiatives, they are ready to take the opportunities offered to promote themselves. Many of them have gradually set up symbols and have shaped their institutions to establish distinct characteristics which can be translated into cultural, economic and political attractiveness. To what extent and under which conditions such developments can contribute to the establishment or to the evolution of regional identity is the main question of the paper.

 

Abstract [It]: Oggi la costruzione di regioni (region building) è al centro di numerose iniziative di sviluppo regionale. Sebbene le regioni, intese come unità territoriali, non abbiano un ruolo formale nella formazione delle iniziative europee, tuttavia esse sono pronte a cogliere ogni occasione per la propria promozione. Molte di esse hanno intrapreso percorsi per creare simboli e articolare istituzioni con delle caratteristiche distinte, che possono essere rese quali attrazioni culturali, economiche o politiche. Fino a che punto e a quali condizioni tali sviluppi possano contribuire alla fondazione oppure all’evoluzione dell’identità regionale è il quesito principale del contributo.
